A small, independent restaurant-cafe and bodega tucked into the corner of Gerrard and Coxwell. Opened by Nicole Cheung in November 2016 with the simple idea that a good neighbourhood needs a good corner.

A cafe counter on a quiet morning, soft window light over a row of pastries and a stack of espresso cups. The corner, 8:13am

Grilled Rapini Sandwich

Garlicky charred rapini with a soft farm egg on a milk-bun. Light enough to take back to the bodega counter, heavy enough to count as lunch.

Step into Bodega Henriette and you will immediately notice the cute little bodega section by the door, stocked with fresh produce and pantry staples. But the real magic is happening in the kitchen.

I think it really improves quality of life when people get out and talk to each other, so my hope is that places like this will encourage that.

A note on the corner

Built around the idea that a neighbourhood needs a corner.

Nicole Cheung also runs Eulalie’s Corner Store a few blocks away. When the lot at Gerrard and Coxwell came up, she said she wasn’t looking to open another room, but the corner was too good to leave to someone else. The bodega side stocks fresh produce, eggs and pantry staples for people walking home from the streetcar. The kitchen does brunch through the afternoon. House-baked pastry, a short list of natural wine, and Pilot coffee on tap. Nine years in.

Best brunch in the east end and they remember your name by the third visit. The Espresso Old Fashioned alone is reason enough.
